A. Name of Library: Online Burma/Myanmar Library
Library’s URL: http://www.burmalibrary.org/introduction.html
Type of Library : Public
About the Library :
The Online Burma/Myanmar Library is a database which functions as an annotated, classified and hyperlinked index to full texts of individual Burma documents on the Internet. It also houses a growing collection of articles, conference papers, theses, books, reports, archives and directories on-site (e.g. the 17MB archive of the Burma Press Summary). The Librarian requests help from specialists to refine the structure and add content. It was launched in October 2001. The Library's starting point historically was the Burma Peace Foundation's documentation of the human rights situation in Burma , and with the UN Burma material, this area still comprises about half the total number of items.
Name and Description of the Program:
1. MySQL software, in combination with PHP
Launched in October 2001, these programs was used to organized on a database into 60 top-level categories based on traditional library classifications, with a hierarchy of some 850 sub-categories. These hold approximately 4000 links (mostly annotated, with keywords and descriptions) to individual documents, and about 400 links to websites which in turn give access to another 100,000 or so documents. The database allows rapid searching in all or specific fields – description/keyword, date, language (we are building up our collection of non-English texts), title, author, source/publisher etc. It can also be browsed through the subject hierarchies. A third way of finding material is provided by a simple alphabetical list of the 900 categories and sub-categories.
2. Greenstone Digital Library
We are using the Greenstone digital library software to build the collection of documents housed on-site. This software allows full-text searching, though at present only the Burma Press Summary uses this feature fully.
3. reg.burma archive http://www.burmalibrary.org/reg.burma/
This is the 220MB archive of the IGC online conference which was the main vehicle for online Burma communications for most of the '90s. The archive, which is fully searchable, contains all the issues of the BurmaNet News from 1993-2001 and its predecessors, early numbers of "Burma Issues" and about 30,000 pages of other material, including some long documents. This is the conference that was searchable from the "Burmanet Gopher" which disappeared a couple of years ago.
4. "The Burma Press Summary" (1987-1996) http://www.burmalibrary.org/show.php?cat=1455&lo=d&sl=0
This file provides substantial summaries, including full text of some laws, speeches and
other documents, from April 1987 to December 1996 It includes the complete Text Archive (i.e.
minus graphics) of Hugh MacDougall's abstracts of "The Working People's Daily" and "The New Light of Myanmar" April 1987 to December 1996. An important resource for Burma researchers.

f. Turfgrass Information File (TGIF) http://0-ticpass.lib.msu.edu.elibrary.mel.org/mel/ mel.pl
Recommended for: General user. Some full text. In the 1960s, the Michigan State University (MSU) Library began to collect printed turfgrass materials. In 1968, the personal collection of the late O.J. Noer, pioneer turf agronomist, was added to the library holdings through the O.J. Noer Foundation. Today, the combined collection is recognized as the most extensive public collection of turfgrass material in existence. Between 1983 and 1992, the United States Golf Association (USGA) Turfgrass Research Program supported the development of the USGA Turfgrass Information File (TGIF). Using the Noer Collection as a foundation, TGIF was designed to systematically inventory published turf research and make the bibliographic information available via a computerized database. Michigan residents or Michigan library access only.
